Nowadays, museum staff are expected to be professional, responsive to community needs, and to the demands of auditors and inspectors from various official agencies
Archaeological Officer, Amy Ball from Craven Museum Services explained the roles and responsibilities of herself and colleague Anna Bowman as museum curators (for Skipton's Craven Museum, The Folly in Settle, the Upper Wharfedale Museum in Grassington, & Embsay Steam Railway museums) - and discussed the impact of the Phoenix project and lottery funding upon their work and the future direction of development of museum services in the Craven area. During her three year tenure she is to set up three major exhibitions, establish a local branch of the Young Archaeologists' Club, and provide community talks, as well as reorganize and catalogue the dusty stores of archaeological material. The latter task is a particularly essential - if daunting - exercise to ensure the preservation and accessibility of our local heritage for everyone in the local community, as well as academic researchers and schools.
The audience appreciated this candid insight and look forward to the forthcoming exhibitions. They warmly welcomed and supported the stirling work of the museum staff in bringing our Craven museums into the 21st century.
