Chapel House Wood

For several years, UWHG members have been actively involved in excavations at Chapel House Wood, between Grassington and Kilnsey.

The project, run by the Yorkshire Landscape Research Trust, and directed by Dr Roger Martlew, has revealed a historic landscape which incorporates the current site – an enigmatic stone structure, probably of Iron Age and Romano-British date, built into the hill slopes.

The joys of British archaeology !
It is far too early to be certain of its function.

However, work on this site is on-going, and there are plans to continue excavations in 2011.

Please note that the site is on private land and not accessible to the general public.

For further information please see a briefing on our webpage here. An interim report on the summer 2009 excavations can be found here

Further details can be found on Yorkshire Landscape Research Trust’s website here
