Practical landscape archaeology with the
Upper Wharfedale Heritage Group

The Upper Wharfedale Heritage Group (U.W.H.G.) was formed in 2005 with the purpose of adding to the knowledge of the archaeologically rich area of Upper Wharfedale.

Membership currently stands at around 70.

Members have been involved in producing a series of landscape surveys, in conjunction with Yorkshire Dales Landscape Research Trust including the area around Threshfield Quarry, a lime kiln at Kilnsey and Langcliffe Scar near Settle. We have also been involved in recording the buildings of the now abandoned Threshfield Quarry, prior to its redevelopmentposter_mar12_sml

Outlines of the projects that we are, or have been, involved in can be viewed here
In 2008 we successfully bid for a grant to survey and excavate a corn drying kiln at Kilnsey, the full report can be viewed here (Warning: this is a 6.8Mb file so may take a while to download)

Recently we have conducted landscape survey of the area east of Embsay reservoir around the former Whitfield Syke mill and are in the process of writing the report.

We are currently participating in the YDNP Traditional Farm Buildings Survey, recording the buildings in and around Kettlewell and Starbotton

UWHG Members also play a major part in the summer excavations at Chapel House Wood, organised by Yorkshire Dales Landscape Research Trust

A programme of talks by  guest lecturers operates during winter, spring and autumn and guided walks  during the summer months details here

The UWHG is affiliated to the Council  For British Archaeology
