The Upper Wharfedale Heritage Group (U.W.H.G.) was formed in 2005 by former students of the University of Leeds School Of Continuing Education Archaeology classes The group was established to enable us to to build on the practical archaeological fieldwork previously carried out in Wharfedale. Membership currently stands at around 40.
A series of landscape surveys have been produced, in conjunction with Yorkshire Dales Landscape Research Trust including the area around Threshfield Quary, a lime kiln at Kilnsey and Lancliffe Scar near Settle. Currently we are involved in recording the industrial archaeology of the now abandoned Threshfield Quarry prior to its redevelopment. In addition members are involved in the The Skipton Community Research Project recording historic buildings on the High Street. Other activities include post-excavation work and desk based research.
UWHG Members also play a major part in the summer excavations at Chapel House Wood, also organised by Yorkshire Dales Landscape Research Trust
A programme of talks by guest lecturers operates during winter, spring and autumn and guided walks during the summer months details here
The UWHG is affiliated to the Council For British Archaeology
